Leading multicultural and multidisciplinary teams

In my career I have had to lead multicultural and multidisciplinary teams: economists, engineers, lawyers. I understood that trust is earned by demonstrating competence, but also by actively listening and supporting each member. The key skills of a successful technical leader are then:

  • Deep knowledge: Gain a thorough understanding of the relevant processes, standards, and technologies. This builds credibility.
  • Effective communication: Clearly explain complex ideas in simple terms. A good leader translates technical data into stories that inspire action.
  • Emotional intelligence: Managing one's own emotions, understanding those of the team, and motivating, especially in moments of pressure.
  • Adaptability: Adapt quickly to changes in the environment. Today, technology and market conditions evolve rapidly, and the leader must always keep learning.
  • Strategic vision: Connect technical challenges with organizational objectives. Analyze future scenarios, anticipate risks, and make balanced decisions that align long-term and immediate actions.

Adaptability and empathy

In fact, soft skills—such as adaptability and empathy—are now “fundamental” according to studies on technical leadership. In my daily practice, I emphasize them. I remember an occasion in a complex project with tight deadlines: I was the first to get up early to solve a technical problem, but I also organized coffee breaks to listen to the team's concerns. That gesture of understanding allowed everyone to focus better on the solution.

Being a technical leader in complex environments requires building "bridges between generations, integrating technology and humanity." I always say: a leader does not impose, but inspires. He must create an environment where young and veteran experts mutually nourish each other. I align my team with this principle: I celebrate technical achievements and at the same time publicly acknowledge the human effort behind them.
